2007 - launched 2008 Schionning Wilderness 1620 | Thor
THOR is a distinctive and highly capable example of the Australian-designed Schionning Wilderness 1620 performance cruising catamaran. Professionally built in Western Australia and launched in 2007/08, she represents a unique interpretation of the respected Wilderness series, blending impressive sailing performance with exceptional practicality for comfortable long-distance cruising and liveaboard life.
Extensively refurbished during a comprehensive two-year program in 2023/2024 at The Boat Works on the Gold Coast, THOR has been thoughtfully modernised throughout. Virtually every system on board has been reviewed or upgraded, creating a highly integrated and efficient vessel that is both comfortable to live aboard and straightforward to operate. One of the vessel’s three cabins has been cleverly converted into a dedicated workshop and utility space, housing the generator, desalinator, and key service systems, allowing maintenance and operation to be carried out easily without disrupting daily life on board.
A defining feature of THOR is the fully enclosed raised helm, offering excellent protection from the elements while delivering outstanding 360-degree visibility. This practical design allows passage-making and docking to be conducted from a comfortable, sheltered position, making extended cruising more enjoyable in all conditions.
Designed as a hybrid between high-performance sailing and practical cruising comfort, the Wilderness 1620 is known for its ability to cover serious distances with ease. THOR has demonstrated impressive sailing capability, comfortably sustaining speeds above 18 knots under favourable conditions. When the wind eases, her twin 75HP Yanmar engines provide efficient propulsion, capable of cruising on a single engine at approximately 7–9 knots while consuming around 3 litres per hour at 2400 RPM. With approximately 1,000 litres of fuel capacity across two aluminium tanks, she offers excellent range and flexibility for extended voyaging.
Recent upgrades include new sails, modern navigation equipment, and a revamped electrical system with an expanded 600Ah, 24-volt lithium battery capacity, along with major servicing to the engines and generator, including new Yanmar SD60 saildrives. The vessel’s Victron Energy electrical system provides efficient power management, supported by a 5kVA inverter and a 4.5kVA Northern Lights generator.
Comfort on board is equally impressive, with spacious queen-sized cabins, a well-equipped galley-up layout, and extensive refrigeration, including a 182L Vitrifrigo fridge and a 150L freezer. A Stella 240L/hour watermaker, an automatic front-loader washing machine, and quality appliances further enhance liveaboard comfort.
Having cruised extensively from Western Australia through Indonesia, Thailand, and the South Pacific, THOR is a proven bluewater catamaran ready to continue exploring. Currently maintained as a full-time liveaboard, she presents as a fully operational and highly capable vessel for serious cruising adventures.
