The Yacht Sales Co Brisbane to Hamilton Island Yacht Race, which was due to depart from Manly in Brisbane on 6 August, has been cancelled due to Queensland’s latest Covid situation.
The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron made the announcement to cancel the event just hours after an extension of the Queensland lockdown was decided:
“RQYS has been closely monitoring the developing COVID-19 situation in QLD, particularly across Greater Brisbane and the surrounding Local Government Areas.
This morning the QLD Government announced an extension of the current COVID-19 lockdown in Greater Brisbane and surrounding Local Government Areas until 4:00 pm Sunday 8 August.
Unfortunately, the extended lockdown leaves RQYS with no other option but to cancel the upcoming 2021 Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel and The Yacht Sales Co Brisbane to Hamilton Island Yacht Races that were scheduled to start on Friday 6 August.
In making this decision, RQYS acknowledges its wider COVID-safe responsibilities to not only crews of boats entered in the races, but also to the communities of Greater Brisbane, Yeppoon, and the Whitsundays.”
David Redfern, Commodore.
Plans for the 2022 event are already underway.
