Eddie Buizen - Mastercraft Marine
2006 Buizen 48 Pilothouse Series 3| Free Spirit of Melbourne
Free Spirit of Melbourne is the last Buizen 48 handcrafted by master boatbuilder Eddie Buizen. She was extensively modified by her owners to enable fast and comfortable extended ocean cruising. More than $700,000 worth of options were added to the standard specified boat as part of the build, making her a remarkable opportunity for astute buyers.
The Buizen 48 has achieved iconic status as a handmade Australian yacht with true integrity. Each model is built to order by a small family company with a rich heritage for fine craftsmanship who invest an average of 12 months and 10,000 man hours on each project.
The new Series 3 keel provides greatly enhanced stability and enables the mast to be lengthened by one metre and the boom for half a metre. In-mast furling with a vertical batten mainsail ensures easy single-handled sailing.
In August 2020 the yacht was rerigged and antifouled, and the hull was Algrip-painted in vivid white in 2017. In addition, extensive upgrades of electronics and equipment have been carried out.
Free Spirit of Melbourne features three double cabins with two bathrooms. Air-conditioned throughout, the yacht boasts more interior space than virtually any 48-footer leaving ample room for all the comforts of a luxury motor cruiser. It features hand-crafted American Cherrywood with a solid teak laid floor, genuine leather seating and a true entertainer’s galley complete with fridge, freezer, stove and microwave.
The raised pilot house provides 360-degree visibility and is fully equipped to operate the vessel from the comforts of the helm chair. With the cockpit and saloon all on one level, the skipper can converse with the passengers, making the Buizen 48 a true social boat.
The generous cockpit seats six for meals at the cockpit table with the gas barbeque conveniently close at hand. The beam-to-beam bimini provides excellent protection from the elements and features zip-in curtains and clears for added comfort.
Davits powered by hydraulic winches accommodate a 3-4 metre tender high off the water and are strong enough to avoid the necessity to remove the outboard motor.
In 2017, Free Spirit of Melbourne’s Raymarine electronics system was upgraded to include two independent autopilots and multiple extras. Care has been taken to ensure 100% back up for all systems. The new 200 amp 24-volt alternator charges the 400 amp/hr at 24 volt house bank, and there are two battery chargers with 100 amp at 24 volt output. The 5 kva Mastervolt inverter charger will power all onboard 240-volt systems, as will the 7.5 Kva Onan generator.
The 24-volt eutectic fridge will keep lettuce fresh for 20 days and is complemented by a large freezer and separate freezer. Both are eutectic and cooled by either the ½ HP or ¾ HP fridge compressors. The Citior watermaker delivers around 200 litres of fresh water per day to the 800L capacity water tanks, making it ideal for extended cruises.
The engine is a 160 HP Yanmar 4LHA with 950 litres of diesel capacity.
Its hull is hand-laid solid fibreglass with triaxial reinforcement glass cloth, incorporating vinylester and polyester resins. All bearers, bulkheads, runners, stringers, floors and joinery are glassed into the hull for strength and rigidity. All timber is milled by Buizen’s own factory and all joinery hand built by their own cabinetmakers and customised for each yacht. Each stainless steel fitting is also custom made.
As a yacht, the Buizen performs admirably. A first place in the inaugural Round the World Millennium Odyssey Race and a second in its division in the gruelling Sydney to Hobart attest to its strength and speed.
